Emily’s pivot, in her own words

My kids killed my career. And I mean that in the best possible way.

I spent over a decade grinding through DC political circles: law school, campaigns, cable news hits, a Vice President title at the largest progressive think tank in the country. My identity was my job title, and I wore that like armor. Then I had three kids in three and a half years, and everything I thought I knew about success stopped making sense. I couldn't be the boss or the employee I needed to be, so I walked away. For a while, it felt like losing: my career, my relevance, my sense of self. But somewhere in that loss was a question I couldn't shake: what if the path to success doesn't have to look the way we've always been told it does?

That question became She Pivots. I started talking with and interviewing women who had left one version of their lives to build something entirely different. The pivot was spurred by different things: a loss, a birth, a diagnosis, a moment of clarity. We make professional decisions based on deeply personal factors all the time, but we almost never talk about them out loud. I wanted to change that. Because the women who inspired me most weren't the ones who climbed the traditional ladder; they were the ones who had the courage to question whether the ladder was taking them somewhere they actually wanted to go.
